5-Day Wildlife & Natural History Tours

What do I need to bring?
The short answer is, "As little as possible".

• Rain gear (wind block fabrics best)
• Personal medications/toiletries
• Camera
• Rubber/hiking boots
• Warm clothing in layers
• Sunscreen
• Seasickness medication
• Sunglasses
• Warm, waterproof gloves & hat
• Sense of humor & fun attitude

Rubber boots are necessary for transfers and for sea kayaking. Waterproof/windproof rain gear, tops and bottoms, will make your experience much more enjoyable also. Please limit your luggage as much as you can.

Is there any electricity in Chrome Bay?
Yes and no. We are truly off the grid, cell phones don't work here, and electrical power in our lodge is limited to small batteries and solar panels. The "Last Laugh" has normal 120V AC power to charge camera and cell phone batteries.

What's provided?
Transportation to and from Chrome Bay, all listed activities, all meals (except lunch in Seldovia), non-alcoholic beverages, bedding, and all items normally included in our day trips. For hot showers, we also provide towels, biodegradable soap, and shampoo.

What's not provided?
Alcoholic beverages, personal snacks, and Alaska fishing license (we sell these on board) are not included. We do have cocktail ice for your personal adult beverages.

What's the food like?
Our meals are based on fresh, local, and sustainable ingredients as much as possible. Please visit our Chrome Bay Menus page for more information about the delicious meals that you will enjoy during your stay.

What if I have food allergies?
Let us know well in advance, and we will work with you to provide alternate offerings. The nearest grocery store is two hours away, and we must coordinate with you well ahead of time.

Can I make changes to the itinerary?
Depending on the group's preference, we can adjust the schedule to meet the needs of our guests in just about any way. This is where the benefit of booking the entire lodge comes into play. If all six guests know each other, accommodating changes is much easier.

What if there is a weather delay?
We will have to adapt to the particular situation at the time to make the most of the hand that mother nature deals us. We intentionally have two free days built into either end of our trips and are able to slip the departure by as many as two days if we have to.

Likewise, we may return to Homer late due to weather and your travel plans should be flexible on both sides of your trip.

Our wilderness yurt lodge in Chrome Bay is the perfect base camp to explore the wildlife and natural history of Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, take a walking tour of a historic village on the way, paddle a sea kayak in a remote bay, and get in a little bit of fishing to boot! Our five day, four night wildlife and natural history tours begin in the Homer harbor Monday mornings at 6:30AM. After boarding the Last Laugh and enjoying a light continental breakfast, we’ll take a short tour of the harbor and point out the different types of fishing boats we share these waters with. Keep a keen eye out for Homer’s own “Time Bandit”, a commercial crabbing vessel made famous by TV’s “Deadliest Catch” reality series.

After we depart the harbor, we will enter the scenic Eldred Passage on our way to Chrome Bay, and visit the village of Seldovia, accessible only by boat or plane. We’ll take a walking tour of this funky town, and you will have plenty of time to enjoy lunch on your own at one of the local restaurants. The remainder of our guided journey to Chrome Bay will take us along the Southern coast of Kachemak Bay and around Point Adam where we enter the Gulf of Alaska. On the way, there will be many opportunities to stop and view sea otters, puffins, whales, mountain goats, and much more. We’ll get settled-in to comfortable double-occupancy yurt lodging, and gather for an orientation.

Your fully guided itinerary will vary based on time of year, weather, and group preference. You can trust our experience and knowledge of Alaska and its wildlife to custom build your tour to incorporate the best wilderness adventure available for the duration of your stay.

Chrome Bay 5-day trips depart on Monday and return on Friday. This is a typical itinerary that may be adjusted as necessary:
Day 1:

6:30-meet at slip G-20 with your light luggage
Continental breakfast served on board prior to departure
Informative harbor tour followed by scenic cruise through the Eldred Passage
10:00-Dock at the village of Seldovia for walking tour
Lunch on your own
12:30-Depart Seldovia Harbor for scenic cruise to Chrome Bay
2:00-Transfer to lodge, check in, and orientation
6:00-Appetizers and dinner are served

Day 2:

8:00-Hot breakfast is served
9:30-Noon-sea kayaking briefing, orientation, and practice
Noon-Hot lunch is served
1:30-4:30-Guided sea kayaking tour in Chrome Bay
6:00-Appetizers and dinner are served

Day 3:

7:00-Hot breakfast is served
8:00-Transfer to “Last Laugh” for 4 hour guided marine mammal tour
1:00-Transfer to lodge
Hot lunch is served
2:30-Guided shore excursion
6:00-Appetizers and dinner are served
