Our guides are trained in coastal kayak leadership and will begin your sea kayaking trip with basic instruction in our sheltered and protected cove. Once everyone feels comfortable with their new skills, we’ll paddle and explore our way along the Chrome Bay shoreline and the coast of Port Chatham. Safety is our number one priority, and a motorized vessel is always just a radio call away. Wildlife is definitely the focus of this trip. You may see black bears, otters, and mountain goats feeding in the tidal flats along the way. Our stealthy and quiet approach is a perfect way to view animals in their natural environment with minimum impact.

If we are lucky enough to experience an extreme low tide on our trip, we’ll stop at one of many tide pools in our area and explore. Tide pools are a unique habitat where the ocean meets the land. This tidal zone is continually shaped by the actions of sun, wind, water, and rock. Life is tough for plants and animals that live in tide pools. Here, many portions of the shoreline are regularly covered and uncovered by the advance and retreat of the tides. In order to survive, tide pool life forms must avoid being washed away by the tidal waves, keep from drying out in the sunlight of low tide, and avoid being eaten. You might see anemones, sea stars, urchins, barnacles, crabs, kelp and other sea plants in a tide pool, and gain a new appreciation for our overlooked intertidal zones.
